Pras Michel reveals Ms. Lauryn Hill initiated the idea for Fugees reunion

The Fugees reunited last week for their first concert in 15 years, and as they prepare for an international tourPras Michel reveals which member first suggested the reunion.

“It was kinda initiated by Ms. [LaurynHill, but the idea was floating around since last year,” the 48-year-old rapper tells Billboard. “I think the culture really needed it, wanted it, so we’re just giving them what they want.”

The trio announced last week that they are celebrating the 25th anniversary of their iconic 1996 album, The Score, with a 12-city tour that began September 22 in New York City.

The tour will continue November 2 in Chicago and will make stops in Oakland, California; Los Angeles; Atlanta; Miami; Newark, New Jersey; and Washington, D.C. The Fugees will then travel abroad to Paris, London, Nigeria and Ghana.

Pras admits that he was nervous about performing again with Hill and Wyclef Jean.

“Because the social media, man, it’s like the Taliban, they’re coming after you — if anything doesn’t smell right, know what I mean?” Pras says. “So in my mind I’m like, It’s gotta be right.”

He says when he heard Hill in the rehearsal, he felt confident, noting, “She started singing some riffs, and I’m like ‘Oh! It’s feeling like ’98! Aiight.’ Then she spit a little bit of that verse she did for that Nas record [‘If I Ruled the World’] and it was like ‘Okay, okay.’ And it just flowed.”

As he looks forward to more tour dates, Pras is gratified by the overwhelming response to their reunion.

“I’m proud of the fact that we were able to have this much of an impact on the culture, and people really resonating,” he comments. “To still have people excited about what we created, that’s my proud moment.”
